During the 15th & 16th centuries the Hausa Songhau empire rose to power in northern Nigeria. By 1000AD the Oyo kingdom dominated southern Nigeria. The Oya gave rise to the Benin civilization. From the 15th to the 18th centuries Benin was heavily involved in the arts, leaving behind a legacy of brass, bronze & ivory sculpture. As early as the 15th century trading began with the Europeans. Through contact with the Europeans Nigeria became involved in the slave trade. [BM] {UA}
