In 1861 Nigeria became a British Colony. By 1960 Nigeria became a fully independent republic. Ethnic struggles lead to civil war during the 1970's and 80's. Civil war lead to military coups, & religious warfare between the Christian south & the Muslim north. A desire for Nigerian oil has prohibited many western countries from complete trade embargos. The self proclaimed president, Abacha, is an autocratic leader promising vague plans for civilian rule by 1998. [BM] {UA}
