Modern Niger

In 1922 Niger became a French colony, administered from a base in Senegal. By 1946 the citizens of French Africa were granted French citizenship and limited self government. By 1958 Niger became an autonomous state within the French Overseas Community. Two years later Niger became an independent republic. This peaceful transition has allowed for close ties with France.
