Between 1200 & 1400 the Kingdom of Mali ruled the area along the Niger River. The Mali empire was extremely wealthy & powerful. The Mali empire was to lose power to the Songhai empire by the end of the 14th century. This large empire split into smaller states in 1591 when the Moroccans sacked Timbuktu. In 1896 Mali became a colony of France. [BM] {UA}
