Ancient Mali

The African region of Mali has been inhabitated for over 4000 years. From about 200BC civilization has flourished along the banks of the Niger River. By 750AD the kingdom of Ghana arose & ruled until Ghana was overthrown by the Muslim Almoravids. The Muslim Almoravids ruled for only 11 years. However, they established Islam as the central religion as it remains today in modern Mali. This is an ancient style mosque in Djene. [BM] {UA}
