In 1971 Britain granted
self-rule to the island colony comprised of the Ellice Islands & the Gilberts.
In 1975 the
Ellice Islands broke ties to become the independent nation of Tuvalu. In 1979 the
Gilbertsbecame the independent nation of Kiribati.
