Medieval Kiribati

The Gilbert Islands, now known as Kiribati, were established as a British protectorate in 1892. The Gilbert Islands were principally occupied by Micronesians. In 1915 Britain expanded their influence to include the Ellice Islands. The Gilbert & Ellice Islands became a British colony. During the early 1940's Japan occupied the Gilbert Islands. This resulted in violent warfare with the Allied forces reconquering this region.
