In the 15th century the Kazakhs were established as a unique people. Unfortunately, they broke apart into 3 groups & were unable to defend themselves from the Mongols when they attacked during the 17th century. The Kazakhs were forced to turn to Russia for protection. It is through these circumstances that Russia came to have complete control over Kazakhstan by the 18th century. [BM] {UA}
