Jamaica finally gained independence in 1962. The struggles since independence have been great as the government tries to deal with an underdeveloped economy coupled with class & racial tension. Through the efforts of Michael Manley of the People's National party some industry has been nationalized & close ties established with neighbouring Cuba. Manley died on March 6, 1997. [BM] {UA}
