Medieval Jamaica

The Arawaks once lived on the island of Jamaica. This group of natives were wiped out with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. The Spanish ruled Jamaica until 1655 when the British took control. Throughout the 18th century Jamaica was a major producer of sugar & became one of the most heavily used slave markets in the world.
