Modern Ivory Coast

In 1842 France established a protectorate over the coastal territory. Throughout the 19th century the French slowly expanded their holding into the interior of the Ivory Coast. By 1904 the Ivory Coast was made a part of French West Africa. Inspired by growing nationalism the African Democratic Assembly led the Ivory Coast to independence. It came in 1960. [BM] {UA}
