Medieval Ivory Coast

Before the 18th century the Ivory Coast was settled by various tribes. These tribes were hostile to one another. About 200 years ago the Baule migrated from Ghana to become the dominant peoples along the Ivory Coast. By the 15th century the Portuguese had begun trading along the coast. The Portuguese were followed by the Dutch, British & French. The Europeans were impinged by the dense forests of the Ivory Coast & exploration was limited. [BM] {UA}
