Modern Ireland
The 1800's met Ireland with
further devastation in what is known as the 'Great Potato Famine". Most of the Irish
population survived on a poor diet of potatoes; when blight struck the potato harvest one
million people
starved while another 1.6 million emigrated to America in search for a better
life.
Shocks stand in a field outside
a stone farmhouse in rural Ireland.
