Iraq has a rich reserve of oil; many pumping stations can be found throughout the country. In 1915 the British governed the country, reaping the benefits of the rich oil deposits. Anti-British factions arose and by 1948 Iraq joined the Arab League. As a result of the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948 most of Iraq's Jews emigrated to Israel. By 1958 the monarchy was overthrown and Iraq was established as a republic. [BM] {UA}
