After independence from Spain and Mexico, Honduras became a member of the United Provinces of Central America. This Spanish-style church in Honduras is just one of many reminders of the Spanish culture in Honduras. After the collapse of the Central American Federation, Honduras became an independent republic in 1838. In the 1900's US firms exploited Honduras and in 1912 the US government sent military forces to protect US interests. [BM] {UA}
