Modern Egypt
The Suez Canal,
completed by the French in 1869 was taken over by the
British in 1875. By 1882 the British
assumed control of Egypt despite
Egypt's continuing ties with the Ottoman Empire until 1914.
In 1922 Egypt gained independence from British rule.
