Throughout the 19th century Spanish colonization continued on the island of Cuba. Between 1868 and 1878 the colonists fought Spain for independence in the "Ten Years War". Breaking free from Spain, Cuba became a US protectorate, thus granting the US the right to intervene in Cuban affairs. [BM] {UA}
