At the cusp of the
20th century political struggles between the Liberals
and the Conservatives continued within
Colombia, finally
ending in the "War of a Thousand Days".
In 1902 the Conservatives won.
In
1903 the U.S. offered to build a canal in Panama, which was then a part of Colombia.
The
Colombian government rejected the offer.Panama was to revolt and separate.
