British & French troops invaded German Cameroon during WWI. The League of Nations divided it into two mandated territories, the British in the west & the French in the east. The Republic of Cameroon, formerly French, became independent in 1960. The northern two thirds of the British Cameroon joined with Nigeria & the southern third joined the Republic of Cameroon.
