Wind Chill
Air picks up heat as it moves over a surface. This effect is
called wind-chill.
A wind-chill scale compares the speed and temperature of
wind to the relative temperature of
cold but still air. Thus 10 degree air
moving, might feel the same as 5 degree air that is
not moving.

Scientists who work at the north and south poles wear several layers of clothing to help
insulate their body against freezing temperatures and the wind. The clothes trap air which
is warmed by the scientists' body heat, keeping them warm.
