The Paradox of the Renaissance
BIRTH OF VENUS (right portion) BY SANDRO BOTTICELLI In order to understand the paradox of Renaissance one must first understand what paradox means. A paradox is a statement or proposition seemingly self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expressing a possible truth. [RA] {BD}
The paradox of the Renaissance: do not reject faith but include antiquity. Botticelli's paintings often attempted to reconcile this paradox as in "The Birth of Venus". In the spirit of antiquity Botticelli depicts the pagan goddess Venus. Venus however was used interchangeably with the Virgin Mary. Both Venus and Mary represented divine love and beauty. [MH] {NR}
