The New Kingdom

The New Kingdom came after the expulsion of the Hyksos from Egypt in 1785BC. This was a new Golden age of prosperity and strong kings. The art began to cover a variety of styles and qualities. This change from the old was not intended to create more realistic figures but rather unfreeze them, make them more relaxed and pliable. [MH] {GB}
Not only the curves but the plastic shapes, too, seem more flexible and relaxed, antigeometric. The playful gestures and informal poses seem in defiance of all rules of the pharaonic dignity. This age brought about a freedom and expressiveness that would have been unthinkable in earlier times. [RA] {HI}
