Born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany, his father was a singer, and his grandfather was the musical director for the Elector (or President). At 4 years, Beethoven's father taught him to play the harpsichord and violin, and he only went to school until the age of 13, when an Italian friend of the family began to tutor him privately. At 11 Beethoven became the organ deputy, and was appointed harpsichordist in the Court Opera at 12 years. MORE! [AW] {JO}
