Amnesia
Complete or partial memory loss, caused by stress or anxiety.
A person may find an experience (for example, witnessing an accident where a close friend is killed)
so stressful that she "forgets" it.
Her memory of the accident may come back in a few hours, or it may not come back for years.
Forgetting the accident is a way for her to "separate" herself from it for awhile,
until she is ready to cope with her memories of the upsetting event.
