The "paint" on the Silicon chip contains "dopants". The resistance to electron flow may be likened to speed bumps. The higher the speed bumps, the more the resistance. Dopants like Phosphorus reduce the bumps from the ground up. Dopants like Aluminum reduce the bumps from the top down. Electrons will flow along the "smoothed" path created.
