Schist
The word 'schist' represents a group of rocks named after the major minerals present in
them; for example, mica is the main mineral in mica schist (shown at left). Schist is characterized by parallel layers of minerals. This rock may be gray to white and have brown to yellow undertones. It forms from various rocks, including slate, shale, and rhyolite. Schist can be found in many places throughout the world, including the Alps and New Zealand.
