Gneiss
Gneiss can be identified by its pattern of alternating light and dark bands. The light bands contain feldspars, and the dark bands contain hornblende and biotite. Gneiss comes from a variety of rocks, including granite, sandstone, and shale, that have undergone regional metamorphism. This rock can be found underneath hills and mountains, such as the Alps. Gneiss is sometimes used as a building material.
