Urea
Urea was the first organic substance to be synthesized in a laboratory. This was accomplished by
Friederich Wohler in 1828. Urea is a toxic compound found in urine. It is a byproduct of protein
breakdown. The powdery white form of urea is used in some fertilizers, plastics, and diuretics.
