Cocaine
Cocaine was once used as an anaesthetic because it blocks nerve conduction. It is a white
crystalline alkaloid from the coca plant, and its chemical formula is
C17H21NO4. The compound inhaled is cocaine
hydrochloride. In small doses, cocaine causes the central nervous system to produce euphoric
feelings. Heartrate, blood pressure, and body temperature are increased. In large doses or
perpetual use, cocaine causes death.
