Aromatics
Aromatics are cyclic organic compounds derived from benzene. Benzene
is the simplest aromatic; its chemical formula is
C6H6. The benzene ring
is six carbon atoms arranged in a hexagon; a hydrogen atom is bonded to
each
carbon atom. Bonds between the carbon atoms are halfway between a
single and a double bond. Electrons are
delocalised within the ring; this means
the electrons are not shared by just two carbon atoms, but move around and
are
equally shared by all the carbon atoms.
