Alkenes
Alkenes are unsaturated, open-chain hydrocarbons; alkenes have a double
bond between two carbon atoms. The general formula is
Cn(H2)n. The double bond makes
alkenes unstable and very reactive. Ethylene is the simplest and most
commonly used alkene. In industry, ethylene is a starting material for many rubbers and
plastics, including two-litre pop bottles. Fruit is placed in ethylene gas chambers just
before delivery, to help it ripen faster.
