Sulphates
Sulphates are inorganic compounds containing the sulphate ion. Sulphates are insoluble in water
and light in colour; most sulphates are fragile. Hydrogen sulphate, commonly known as sulphuric
acid, is used to produce fertilizers, detergents, and dyes. Plaster of Paris, used in the walls and
ceiling of houses and buildings, is calcium sulphate or gypsum. Barium sulphate is a pigment in
paints and in cosmetics.
