Uraninite is also known as uranium oxide; thorium is also found in this mineral. The colour of uraninite ranges from green to brown. Black uraninite is called pitchblende; M and Mme Curie discovered polonium and radium in pitchblende. This mineral is radioactive, and is found in a variety of environments. Deposits occur in various places, including Ontario, Canada, and Italy. Uraninite is recognized as an important source of uranium. [LM] {CC} {SS}
