Quartz
Quartz (SiO2) is known as a silicate, which form the largest and best known class of
minerals. Quartz is very common, making up approximately 12% of the earth's crust. Pure
quartz is colourless. However, when impurities are present there is a whole range of
colours. Quartz in its purest form is transparent, otherwise it is translucent. Two of the
most common varieties of quartz are amethyst and citrine.
