Pyrophyllite (hydrated aluminum silicate) can be identified in nature by its white or green fibrous crystals. It develops in metamorphic rock environments in association with andalusite, muscovite, barite, and gypsum. Substantial amounts of pyrophyllite, a semi-rare mineral, are located in the southeastern United States and in South Africa. This mineral is used in the fabric and paper-making industries.
