Opal
Opal is a silicate that usually contains iron and
aluminum. Opals can vary in colour, but all have a pearly luster. Dark-coloured opal is
called black opal; this is the most precious. Light-coloured opal is white opal, and
yellow-orange to red opal is fire opal. Opal can be found in many rock cavities, but
precious opal is believed to be limited to Mexico and the western U.S.A.
