The very rare mineral lazurite is called lapis lazurite when it is shaded with green. Pure lazurite is a beautiful deep blue to violet-blue colour. It usually appears in compact masses, very rarely found in crystal form. This sky blue mineral has long been used for decorative purposes. Lazurite was once used as the pigment ultramarine blue. Exceptional lazurite has come from Afghanistan, Chile, and Russia. Lapis lazurite is the birthstone for the month of December. [BM] {CC} {SS}
