Agate is a member of the mineral chalcedony. Chalcedony which is a variety of quartz has a variety of different gemstones, including the banded specimen of agate. These layered bands contrast in colour and in translucency. Other gemstones of the mineral chalcedony include "chrysoprase", which is green in colour, "heliotrope" or "bloodstone" is red with green speckles, and "jasper" which is speckled brown, yellow, green or red. These different gemstones are found in a variety of areas worldwide. Agate is commonly found in Brazil, Uruguay and the United States. [BM] {CC} {SS}
