Spinel
Spinel (magnesium aluminum oxide) is a hard mineral that may be a variety of colours, including
white, pink, blue, and black. The colour depends of what other elements, such as iron and
manganese, are present. Spinel is commonly found in intrusive igneous rocks and in
metamorphic rocks. It is abundant in Afghanistan and Thailand. Quality spinel is considered a
gemstone, and has been used in place of sapphire and ruby.
