Yttria (earth containing yttrium) was discovered by Gadolin in 1794; yttrium was isolated by
Wohler in 1828. Monazite sand and bastnasite are principal sources. Yttrium is used with
europium to make red phosphors in TV tubes. It is found in garnet, a gemstone. Yttrium is also
used to increase the strength of aluminum and magnesium alloys.
