Transition Metals
The transition metals are elements unfilled inner electron orbitals. A transition metal has a
metallic lustre and can conduct electricity well. Transition families are named according to the
element at the top of the family; for example, family 8 is called the iron family. Some common
transition metals are iron, nickel, and silver. The transition metals are important in manufacturing
many metallic products, such as steel, wiring, and pipes.
