The presence of Argon in air was suggested by Cavendish in 1785 but Argon was officially discovered by Lord Rayleigh and Sir William Ramsay in 1894. It is mainly used in electric light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, and similar devices. Since it is nonreactive, Argon is used industrially as an inert gas shield for welding and cutting.
