About The Elements
Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down any further by chemical means. All the
elements are listed in the Periodic Table. 109 elements have been discovered. Many of the
elements occur naturally, but element 61 and elements 93 to 109 have been made in the
laboratory. About 3/4 of the elements are metals; the rest are nonmetals and gases. Only mercury
is liquid at room temperature; all the other elements are either solid or gaseous.
