Chlorine was discovered by Scheele in 1774 but named in 1810. It is found in nature combined
usually with sodium or potassium. Pure chlorine is a yellowish-green gas that is poisonous to
humans. Chlorine is used to produce materials such as textiles and paints. Chlorinated
compounds are used for bleaching and disinfectants. Chlorine is used in pools.
