Strontium was discovered by Davy in 1808. It is mainly found in the minerals celestite and
strontianite. When strontium is burned, it produces bright red-coloured flames; this makes it
useful in pyrotechnics. A strontium isotope is a beta emitter used in nuclear auxiliary power
systems. The name is derived from "Strontian", a Scottish town.
