Magnesium was recognized by Black as an element in 1755, isolated by Davy in 1808 and
prepared by Bussy in coherent form in 1831. It does not occur by itself, but can be located in the
minerals magnesite and dolomite. It is used in pyrotechnics and flares. Magnesium alloys are
essential in airplane and missile construction.
