Alkaline Earth Metals
An alkaline earth compound is an inorganic oxide, containing oxygen and one of the metals
found in the second family of the Periodic Table. Alkaline earth metals are very reactive. They
are called earth metals because they are unchanged by fire and insoluble in water. Alkaline earth
metals form many inorganic compounds, and thus become minerals found in the earth's crust.
Coral is calcium carbonate; another version of calcium carbonate is marble.
