Beryllium oxide was discovered in 1798 by Vauquelin, but the metal form was isolated in 1828
by Wohler and Bussy. Beryllium is light with a high melting point, which makes it a favourable
metal in industry. Beryllium copper is used in springs and electrical contacts. Emerald and
aquamarine are forms of beryl, a beryllium compound.
