Nobelium was identified and discovered in 1958 by Ghiorso and co-workers in California. Nobelium is a radioactive element whose properties are not yet known. Its most stable isotope has a half-life of only 3 minutes. Nobelium is named in honour of Alfred Nobel, discoverer of dynamite and founder of the Nobel Prizes.
