Mendelevium was discovered in 1955 by Ghiorso and co-workers.
Mendelevium is a radioactive element, and the half-life of the most stable isotope is two months.
It is named in honour of Dmitri Mendeleev, the man credited with publishing the first periodic table back in 1869.
